Walter Jack Cunningham was born on August 21, 1917, in Comanche, Texas. Cunningham received A.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Texas and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He joined the Yale University faculty in 1946 and taught in the departments of electrical engineering, engineering and applied science, and mathematics.
